The Last Day of Fasting - 2008

2008.10.18
Arghhh!!! My Walls!!...
That was what we heard from my Aunt's mouth during this incident.

Leaking Walls...
This was what my Aunt was arguing about.

Food Preparation Time...
The basic ingredients.

More Food To Prepare...
One of the many chefs of the house preparing food.

Fire Starter...
That's my Grandma. 70 and still strong and starting to make rendang Ayam. She also started the cooking spree.

More Items To Buy...
There were just not enough items in the kitchen thus a list was born for more items to be stuffed in the kitchen and then into our mouths.

Back To Charcoals...
It always tastes better on charcoals. The rendang then were transferred from a conventional modern kitchen onto the old school stove.

The Lovely Rendang Ayam...
Ahhhh, it has finally finished.

Next, Kuah Kacang (Nuts)...
Yummy, this is for the 'nasi hempit' with rendang daging.

Chillies!!...
For variety of foods but mainly for the kuah kacang. This is before it grind.

More Preparations...
Another chef at work.

Smack That Fish/Meat...

Two Generations Of Chef...

Preparing The Roti Jala...
One Aunt got 'sesat' in this scene... He he.

Here Is How You Start The Roti Jala Process...
My Aunt prepares one of the best roti jala with the combination of one of the best meat curry you'll ever find.
This dish however is for breakfast on Raya morning which has been done since I could remember.

Checking The Fish...
This is one of the experimental dish of this year but it turned out OK.

Chefs Taking 5...
More like washing other items!

Preparing The Table...
These items are for breaking the fast. Light and easy.

The Prepared Fish...
Sedap kan? He he.

Bird Curry!!...
We usually see Puyuh goreng now Puyuh curry.
My Aunt prepared this from their home - she lives on the home ground.

Salad Dish...

Fast Breaking...
Light dishes were served before prayers.

Early Birds Praying...
My sons were the 1st to start praying while waiting for other guests to arrive.

Maghrib Prayer...
Everyone was anxious and hungry so waiting for the Imam was really a challenge.

After The Prayers...
Everyone shaking hands (salam) after Maghrib prayers (all prayers too).

Chefs Having Dinner...
This is where the chefs of the house sits to eat each every year. And they always reserve the best of their cook on this table (I think next year I want to sit here also... he he).

The Chemical Romance...
This water was specially designed by the chemist master - my cousin Rafi. Its his job every year to prepare water and this year he failed coz no one went to the toilet after drinking.

Preparing For Isyak Prayers...
After our stomach were stuffed, we head down again for Isyak prayers.

Tahlil For The Arwah (Passed Away)...
We had tahlil among ourselves for the ones who have passed away in our families which includes my Father and Grandfather.
Al-Fatihah.
Amin.

The Ultimate Dessert, Last Piece...
Yeah! With coffee or tea after prayers, this dessert was the ultimate.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah!! The pics have been developed!!!

Raya Aidilfitri this year was really satisfying, tiring and lots of Rain(s)...

So I'll start my story...
30th Sept -
1205 am - stucked at McDonalds (coz Burger King had shut down their operation) drive thru. Needed some food for our journey and the kids were jumping up and down for nuggets!

0100 am - On the highway to Penang. Not so many cars coz most have run-away earlier.

0130 am - Got fedup with drivers who really don't learn what left/center/right lane is and went over the speed limit by maintaining 120kmh (no need to go details the top). The definition...
Left lane - for easy go-ers who are sleepy or just could cope up. Also for the safety for the small remps who wants to get kampung safely.

Center lane - for those who drive according to the speed limit and maintain that speed.

Right lane - for those who just couldn't wait or need to go to the toilet terribly. For people who just couldn't go faster than the car behind them please move aside and don't forget to signal (this rarely happens). Also for those who don't know what cornering is about please move aside.
This lane is also for those high speed remps and the superbikes.

0230 am - Favoured the corners after the Ipoh tunnel and moved like a remp overtaking cars left and right during cornering (felt damn satisfying).

0330 am - Adam had to go to the toilet also pumped more burning fuel. Realising too late for sahur already so had to even speed more - wife was calm and maintaining me so I'm awake.

0400 am - After the Taiping exit it was raining all the way to Penang. I even had to slow down to 80kmh due to the heavy rain.

0500 am - Reached home ground and no one picked up the phone to open the door (still raining). Luckily the number I called annoyed one of my cousins that she went down to open the 5 minute electric gate.

0530 am - Had sahur with the clans. Wife in cultural shock.

0600 am - Learned that Penang has not stopped raining even before I reached Penang! Due to that and the fact that the idiot new neighbour of my grandma's house redesigned his house without thinking of consequences (twin house - for ages, smashed down to make a new one) has made water leaking through the walls and made the front verandah cracked.
Did some CSI work.

0700 am - Only then had a decent sleep. Rest of the gang were trying to call up the neighbour.

1000 am - Woke up due to heavy knocking next door. Wanted to go give the guy next door a point of view luckily Aunt said they came at 0730 to look at the situation and was shocked how this lonely house is now stuffed with people (sleeping some more). They have taken proper measures - lucking coz if they wanted to lessen my fasting points they were more than welcome with my Cantonese (Penang speaks Hokkien)vulgaring speech.

1100 am - Started my journalism catch watching chefs at work. Aunts, uncles and grandma were having a little cultural schock as there was a paparazi around monitoring them (and also the flashes of lights going on in the kitchen). Lucky grandma was into technology. Had great gossips around the kitchen crew too (that's why I like to hang out there).

1830 pm - Everyone beating each other up to get into the toilet for their baths and preparing the food to break fast.

1905 pm - Break fast with some light food.

1930 pm - Had Maghrib prayers the whole clan (wife had to be excluded or else the boys would be happily rolling infront of people).

1945 pm - Reunion dinner. Lots of laughters came in. Had great food from the preparation.

2030 pm - Isyak prayers.

2045 pm - Tahlil held leaded by my Uncle. The cousins were supposed to do the Doa but all had their reasons he he. I as a photog had exact reasons he he.

2130 pm - Had dessert prepared by one of the finest dessert preparer with cool banana cheese cake that came from heaven.

0000 am - Down with tiredness and off to bed while cousins were on a new board game till 0300 am I heard them.

The wife and kids were on cultural schock. It was their 1st time celebrating Raya in Penang. As for me I think this was the 1st since 6 years ago. We always have our reunion dinner on the eve of Raya - the trend started by my late Grandfather and we kept it going on as we found it to be very beneficing (spell gore).

Wife still stunned of what is happening is however very happy coz everyone liked her being around even though she couldn't really help coz she has 2 lovers running around.

Well this was my before raya... How was yours?

Next will be raya day...
