You can see the diatom inside!


In the top photo you can see the diatom inside. In the bottom one, taken with oblique blue-filtered lighting, you can see the outside texture of the ciliate in detail. These photos ARE of the same object!

dnaknitter A ciliate is a microscopic organism with cilia--you can see the cilia in these photos. (This ciliate may be a paramecium but I'm not sure.) A diatom is a tiny algae with a double shell made of silicon. I love diatoms because they come in so many different shapes and designs, many of them quite complex and beautiful.
