A ciliate is a microscopic organism with cilia--you can see the cilia in these photos. (This ciliate may be a paramecium but I'm not sure.) A diatom is a tiny algae with a double shell made of silicon. I love diatoms because they come in so many different shapes and designs, many of them quite complex and beautiful.
