The Flood

2008.02.06
pixel
1. This water belongs in the riverbed about 200 yards from here.
pixel
2. More river water where it doesn't belong.
pixel
3. I'm guessing the river is at least 2-3 feet high right here.
pixel
4. More water...
pixel
5. This is usually just an open field...
pixel
6. And more water...
pixel
7. Water, water everywhere...
pixel
8. Lock 39, Ohio & Erie Canal. This is usually empty...
pixel
9. Many (seemingly?) empty snail shells in a waste weir. A waste weir carried excess water (the canal needed only four feet) to the Cuyahoga River.
pixel
10. A closer shot of the snail shells.
pixel
11. More snail shells...
pixel
12. This is usually a farm field. The riverbed is 200 yards from where I am standing.
pixel
13. It is official: ducks like floods.
pixel
14. This looks like a good spot to turn around and head back to my car...
pixel
15. The towpath looks okay here, but who knows what lies ahead...
pixel
16. The water was NOT this close to the towpath when I first passed this spot, or I would have taken a photo of it then. Right when I turned around, the rain really started coming down. If it keeps up, the river will be pouring into the canal in a couple of hours.
pixel
17. This bridge does dip down to go under Rockside Road, but the canal is way high...
pixel
18. There is usually a canal on this side of the guardrail and a road on the other side. Currently, it's all canal...
pixel
19. Check out my photos on 01.21.08 for a look at how the canal usually looks...
pixel
20. Talk about being in the right place at the right time! I could not have planned this! As I was taking photos of this road sign and a "High Water" sign, this guy in a kayak came cruising down Canal Road. Seriously, he is directly over the road.
pixel
21. The photo says it all...
pixel
[21 photos] When I heard that there was massive flooding in Northeast Ohio due to a lot of rain the past few days, I knew that today I needed to find a river. I have taken some time off from the Ohio & Erie Canal and the accompanying Towpath Trail, but I had to check it out. I do not think the pictures do the tremendous amount of rogue water justice.
