The name Joshua tree was given by a group of Mormon settlers who crossed the Mojave Desert in the mid-19th century. The tree's unique shape reminded them of a Biblical story in which Joshua reaches his hands up to the sky in prayer.

After the beautiful sites of Eagle Point, we drove another couple of miles along the West Rim to Guano Point. We were served a barbecue lunch at Guano Cafe and it was much better than the place's name would lead you to expect!
Guano Point was named after a old mining operation where an aerial tramway was built in order to mine nitrogen-rich bat guano for fertilizer from Bat Cave. Mining ceased in 1960, but remnants of the tramway remain as historic relics.
The views from Guano Point were even better than Eagle Point!
