What I've Learned In 200 Posts

2008.01.24
Self portrait taken the same day as the duck pictures. It was about 30° out, so my face was nice and red from the cold.

This is my 200th post. I've thought a lot over the last few days about what I was going to write here. Most of you who visit regularly know that I like to joke around and have fun with my pictures and that I have a strange sense of humor. Originally I was going to do a "Best Of" post, showing off what I consider to be some of my best photographs and possibly making a few good jokes.

Obviously I went another direction.

When I first joined Photoblog I did so because I wanted a place to share my work, receive some constructive criticism and hopefully hone my craft. I got a lot more than I bargained for.

Yes, I feel like I've gotten better in the year since I joined. But I found out that keeping this blog up has changed my point of view. It's not about the photographs as much as it is about the photographer.

I have 200+ people in my "friends" list. More than some, less than others. It's not a competition for me, if I see someone's blog and like their style of photography, I add them. Along the way I've met people from all over the world. I've seen places I will most likely never be able to go; from other areas here in the U.S., to Canada, Mexico, Iran, Poland, Germany, Australia, China, Singapore, and Thailand. The list goes on and on.

I've connected with some of you more than others. I think Matt and I were separated at birth, But so many of you have touched me through your photography and the sharing of your life stories.

I made yet another connection this week with a fellow Photoblogger. I've been a huge fan of her work ever since I joined Photoblog, but this week I found out we have another connectoin other than photography. We both have relatives who share an experience during WWII; her father as a captive, my great uncle as one of the liberators. Someone I would most likely never have met had I never joined Photoblog, but our families have crossed paths 63 years prior, leaving a lasting impression on both.

So thank you Photoblog for reminding me that photography isn't just about what's in front of your lens, it's who is behind it.

vollenda Great post and I also agree with you. So many photos have the personality of the photographer in them. You don't really come to understand that by glancing thru them. But on photoblog, we get to read the thoughts and ideas behind them too and it makes the experience of viewing them that much more.

MHJphotos Dennis ... great post! My original profile (written by Heidi) stated that we like to take pictures and thought we should be sharing them with family and friends (before all of my blog hogging). Little did we know that the 'friends' we'd be sharing them with would be some truly amazing people! We came for the pictures, we stay for the people.

I'm amazed at how this blog is so much like real life! We have our small (but growing) group of core friends that you simply cannot wait to connect with daily. Then you have a group of 'friends' that are more casual in nature. You pop in every once in a while, catch up, and you may not cross paths again for a while. Then you have the so called 'friends' that somehow use you for some sort of personal gain. Its actually quite fascinating to me!

We are so much alike, its SCARY. Perhaps we were not only separated at birth, but shared the same brain or something!

Congratulations on #200 my friend, this is quite an accomplishment!

SilkeHoltmann Congrats - not only for 200th post - but also for your intensive thoughts !
Well - you said "...joke around and have fun with my pictures".
Leave it at that and continue to have fun !
The "real life" is strong enough - enjoy the virtual one!

In German I could say much more but in English it`s a little bit difficult for me. Hope you understand my comment!

Greetings to "Red-nosed"-Dennis !!

lexlevans great words! seriously, i agree that it really is about the person behind the camera. i visit people's posts not only because i like their photos but because i like who they are. that's fantastic that you were able to connect with someone about WWII - it's fascinating how connected we all really are. Congrats on 200 - a great accomplishment and i always look forward to seeing what you have in store on your post - plus i really appreciate your humor! :-)

eljapa Congrats Dennis, great post. I have to agree with you. Joined some other blogs earlier that only focus on the pics and give bad critics on every post. Posted my 100th post here a while ago as you know and i really love this blog as it is. Sure if i get a tip telling me how to do things better i really enjoy that but main thing is meeting people ( or goats), thats what makes this blog diffrent then others i saw. Hope to be sharing with you and all the others a long time more.

mybigbackyard Nicely done, my co-photoblogging friend. Photoblog was my first experience with posting photos online; I've explored a few others in the last few months just to see what was out there. I was less than impressed. I love the format of this site, most specifically because of the reasons you stated - the connection to other people.

Congratulations on your 200th! Here's to 200 more (clink!).

jonrake Congratulations Dennis. Your words ring true regarding what's behind the lens. I really enjoy the humor and openness on your post. You have captured the spirit of what photoblog is about. I need to devote more time to this site and get out of this as much as you have.

ACH365 Hey, guess what! My husband's grandfather was a baker in Holland during WWII. He hid Jewish friends and neighbors in his bread basket as he rode his bike around in order to hide them from the Nazi's and get them from one safe place to another. Eventually, one of his neighbors turned him in and he had to go off to the concentration camps. Grandma was pregnant with their third child when that happened. She had that baby and kept the bakery open and running until the end of the war. When I think my life is tough with three small children, I think of her. As the war was ending, a group from his camp was being marched to a boat that would be set ablaze and sunk. Grandpa and a priest escaped in the night and he made his way home to his wife and three girls. They eventually had a fourth girl and in immigrated to the US when my mother-in-law was about 10 years old. She actually came through Ellis Island. We named our first born son after this man and broke a 100+ year tradition on my husband's father's side of the family to do it.

Congratulations on your milestone!
