Iridescent Clouds

2009.04.14
Iridescent cloud over a farm in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Close up.

Iridescent cloud over Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Iridescent clouds can appear when very uniform water droplets or ice crystals form in high altitude clouds. When the viewer and the sun are in the correct positions, the colors hit the eye from different directions, making rainbow like patterns. I have caught photos of Iridescent clouds twice, but I am told it's not that rare.
