modern mandala

2007.08.28

enlarge, please.

[taken in KLCC, november 2001]

mandalas are traditionally painstakingly drizzled sand paintings done by buddhist or hinduist monks, they are often symbolic for the universe and serve to concentrate the meditative mind onto the fullness and symmetry of the creation.

THIS mandala was in the middle of a busy shopping mall, surrounded by tourists and spectators, carefully guarded by security personell - and the only meditation possible was about the prizes for all the special offers in the shop windows.

jendayee is it a carpet or a painting ? you've got to have a hudge appartment to buy it !

eidea @jendayee: it is neither a carpet nor a painting. it is really done with colored gravel/sand and you coulnd't buy it or take it away...

mandalas include the concept of their destructing after a certain time. this ceremonial wiping is done usually after some time of display, a week or so, by the monks that did produce it.
