Bolivia -7 Potosi-2

2008.12.20
Some shots of a mine, its possible to take tour inside to view the awful, cramped, dangerous conditions these people work in, we went on the Saturday with a miner, nobody was working due to the holiday weekend.................good .............!!

Typical entrance, maintenance and safety are virtually non-existant as they cost money, the mines are majority run by co-operatives, the rewards are small, but as its virtually the only work available in Potosi the options are limited...........

Roof collapses are a regular occurence, the wagons are pushed by hand through these shafts, 13 years old is a regular starting age to work here, family tradition prevails still.

the mining museum to explain the history of the industry

El Tio, the miners "God", with the miners standard diet of coca leaves and 96% alcohol, .............. beer and whisky are for babies our guide told us.....

Miner co-operative, everybody dressed up for the celebrations

The miners and their familes marched for the potosi anniversary, proud people in an industry that has abused, maimed, and killed their relatives and friends over the centuries, but still they continue to search for the motherlode...the harsh reality is that the silver is virtually exhausted, as are the ones who work the mines day after day..... but they got to feed and take care of the family any way possible...... and this industry is really all there is for Potosi
