Day 6: Norris and Grand Canyon of Yellowstone

2009.07.05
On our second day in Yellowstone, we planned to make a circle tour of the Lower Grand Loop Road.

We stopped by this beautiful spot along the Madison river.

Family photo!

We then stopped at Artist's Paintpot - a collection of fumaroles and hot springs.

We did not come here last time because it was a long walk up a hill.

Kandak could somehow manage to climb up the hill and down.

It seemed that the water has dried up from the area.

The fumaroles were still steaming though.

It's really barren this landscape.

We then went to Norris Geyser Basin.

This is called Congress Pool to commemorate the act by Congress to recognize this place.

Don't forget that this place smells terrible! Btw, that's Emerald Spring.

Steamboat Geyser holds the record for the highest spouting..

..but it doesn't do that often or predictably.

We then headed to the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone.

To get to the brink of the Lower Falls, we had to walk down 3/8 mile and 600 feet down.

The Yellowstone River is very powerful.

Lower Falls does not fall as high as the Upper Falls that cannot be seen together due to the curvature of the river.

But it sure carved a beautiful canyon.

Not as deep as the Grand Canyon, but pretty.

Sarah loves to ask her Daddy to model for her :P

Group photo!

The tour bus that brings tourists around.

We then traveled to the other side of the canyon to the South Rim to get a good view of the Upper Falls.

For family album :)

Daring pose.

One wildflower of Yellowstone.

Due to time constraint, we did not manage to complete the loop today, so we turned back just after Canyon.

On the way back, we spotted a bison resting near the road.

..as well as the rare coyote.
