Day 7: Old Faithful and Completing the Loop

2009.07.06
On the third day at Yellowstone, we decided to try the loop again, but anti-clockwise this time.

We stopped at the Upper Geyser Basin first.

Near the Jelly Geyser.

Farhan met his friend from Angell, Robin here. Small world!

We then headed for the Old Faithful. It was hotter today. The models are hot too!

D, Sarah and I decided to take the trail up the Observation Point some 200 foot up the hill with 1.1 mile walk, while Farhan and Kandak explored the rest of the Lower Geyser Basin.

This Solitary Geyser is located far from his other geyser-friends.

It was a long walk up.

We reached the top just in time for the show by the Old Faithful.

It was indeed a splendid view.

The walk up was worth it.

On the way down, we spotted a marmot.

The walk down was easier.. lucky we took the long way up, otherwise, the initial climb would be harder.

D rewarded us all with ice cream.

We then stopped by at Kepler Falls.

...and Isa Lake that straddles the continental divide. One side of the lake drains to the Gulf of Mexico, while the other goes to the Pacific.

For lunch, we stopped near West Thumb. We walked through the woods to reach the lakeshore, which offered us a nice view of the lake. We were warned to be alert for grizzlies though (that never came)

At Lake Yellowstone hotel, we spotted more bisons.

This guy has never seen bisons in person before.

This part of the lake was more breezy.

Family photo!

At Fishing Bridge.

Near Mud Volcano, probably Sulfur Cauldron. This place has the highest concentration of hydrogen sulphide. Super smelly!

Sarah's photography skills in display.

Then LeHardy Rapids where we say Cutthroat Trouts trying to swim upriver to spawn. We even saw one jumping!

Looks like we will manage to complete a loop today. So we stopped at the Canyon again.. at the brink of Upper Falls, which we did not go yesterday.

This bald eagle nesting always creates a traffic jam in Yellowstone.

We were so happy to complete our mission, but upon returning to our tent site, we were greeted with strong winds that blew off our gazebo! Someone managed to rescue it before it flew away further. :-(
