Day 9: Glacier National Park

2009.07.08
Welcome to Glacier National Park, or the proper name, Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park, since it was combined with the Canadian Waterton National Park on the north.

We stopped at the Visitor Center in Apgar to buy souvenirs and plan the drive.

The park is huge and mountainous, but we will only use one road--from West Glacier to St. Mary on the east.

The water in the lake was so clear since it is glacial water--no pollution or dirt.

Deers were wandering in the parking lot, but bears were nowhere to be seen.

A pika looking out for problems.

Glacial rivers are clear, cold and...

.. fast flowing...

.. generating lots of ions that make people happy.

The scenery was breathtaking.

We drove up to The Loop.

Group photo everyone!

The road we traveled was known as Going To The Sun Road, following some native American naming traditions.

A glacier cuts across the road, that was then cut away by the snow plow.

As we reached Logan Pass, the highest driveable point on the route, penny-sized hail started to fall.

They can hurt if it's any bigger.

I cannot stand the sudden cold in the glacier.

But not this model.

The snow has been melting faster this year, so they say, and the glaciers have been receding at record pace.

Farhan did not miss the opportunity to participate in the Junior Ranger Program, which he passed with flying colors. Here he is taking the Junior Ranger oath.

Yep, Farhan now owns seven Junior Ranger badges or patches.

How did that island get to be in the middle of the lake?

Glacier National Park is very big, with different parts having different characteristics. According to this map, we only covered 3 out of 7.

There was an osprey nesting near St. Mary's Visitor Center.

NIK AI was there.

When we turned back, the sun started to come out, and I managed to brave the cold to pose at Logan Pass.

The kids have no problem, of course.

The clearing sky accompanied us on the way down.

We spotted a mountain goat with its kid walking towards a guy. Lucky him!

When it was our turn to wait at the construction site, we got a spot by the creek. Nice!
