Day 14: Mount St Helens and to Portland

2009.07.13
Bye Seattle! Our journey continued down south on Interstate 5 towards Portland.

D was contemplating whether to detour to Mount St Helens or not as it would take additional two hours to and fro from the I-5. Since we still had time and Portland was not that far from Seattle, we decided to visit this National Volcanic Monument.

As NIKAI was climbing the mountain, we were at the same level with the clouds. Heh!

We seemed to be visiting cold places for this trip eh?

We knew it would be cloudy and foggy up here.

As we passed by the welcome sign, we noticed lots of young pine trees.

Going up to 3000 feet

Going up and down the mountain range.

When we reached this elevation, we knew we were close to the volcano already as we could see lots of tree stumps. Mount St Helens volcano erupted catastrophically in 1980.

We parked our car somewhere in the clouds.

At the Johnston Ridge observatory.

Inside the visitor center, we watched an interesting and informative film about the eruption.

As what we anticipated, we would not be able to see the crater on this cloudy day.

Lots of chipmunks though!

We got excited when the clouds revealed a bit of Mount St Helens.

For the family album - only a bit of the volcano, hee..

It would be beautiful on a clear day.

Well, that was the best we could take!

We also listened to a very informative ranger briefing.

Yeay, we could at least see the crater before we bid goodbye but not that clear in this picture.

Hey, one last photo with the lava track and Spirit Lake in the background.

Lots of tree stumps around the area due to the massive volcanic eruption.

It has been almost 30 years already.

We were among the last ones to go down the mountain.

Small trees are making their way on this fertile lava land.

We resumed our journey to Portland.

Welcome to Oregon, everyone! Our first time too!

After 13 nights of camping, we took a break for three nights in Portland hotel to rest :). Yeah, we were all exhausted and deserved to sleep on a comfy bed.

We also enjoyed a nice dinner at Shari's restaurant nearby our hotel.

We hoped to be well-rested for the return leg of our roadtrip :)
