Day 16: Portland

2009.07.15
D had to do some errands at the post office in the morning. Kids and D did not enjoy the free breakfast at the hotel. They missed the daily BELT (without tomato) breakfast which I always make at the campsite. Hee... so I had to make egg sandwich today. Hmm...

Again, we were really resting in Portland without any firm agenda for the day. Heh! I suggested to drive around downtown and... btw, that's Oregon Convention Center!

A lot of people were out...

... to enjoy the summer sun!

We went up to the hill top and parked at Washington park.

Hoping to snap pictures of Portland skyline from here but too many trees blocking our view.

Instead, I toured the Rose Garden with Sarah.

Sarah remarked Tokmi would enjoy these lovely roses :).

This pose is for you,Tokmi!

Gorgeous!

However, the boys did not seem to be interested. They were busy eating our packed lunch and that salad to go.

Wow, Gold Medal Rose Garden!

Hence, we got to pose for more pictures. Heheh!

But only Sarah was interested to be my model.

So many varieties but ...

... red ones are always striking.

We then made our way down again to downtown Portland. Ohh... lately we seemed to make a stop or drive-thru starbucks. I would have my coffee in the morning and the kids enjoy the promotion Green Tea Frap grande for only two bucks in the afternoon :).

Btw, we thot our hotel had WiFi performance issue as I could not upload my photos there. So we tried Starbucks WiFi. Same problem! Mike from Photoblog later broadcasted that the site had been attacked. No wonder... that was my reason for the delay in uploading photos when we were in Portland.

At Starbucks, we saw one nice photo on the internet of Portland with Mount Hood in the background, which was taken from one marina at Hayden Island. We then made our way there!

Unfortunately, it was a private marina with private parking!

There was this park on the island but we could not see Portland skyline from this side.

Nevertheless, we saw these interesting floating homes.

Farhan said he would have enjoyed fishing from home. Hah!

Portland has many bridges but ...

... can't beat Pittsburgh, city of bridges!

Since we could not get picture of Portland skyline with Mount Hood in the background, ...

We went on Mount Hood scenic byway.

Heading towards Mount Hood.

Pretty but blur... sorry!

As we progressed further down the way, Mount Hood seemed to be on the other side of the mountain.

When we made a stop here to get the map of the route, we learned that we had to proceed another many more miles to complete the byway. But we decided not to continue since Mount Hood is not a national park or monument. It's good for those ambitious hikers!

We turned back and had an early dinner at Shari's restaurant again and enjoyed free pie on Wednesday nite :)
