Day 19: Whale watching at Depoe Bay

2009.07.18
Despite chilly nites in a tent, it was sad to say goodbye to this beautiful Alsea Bay. If you compare this picture and our previous picture in Day 17 entry, you will notice a sand bar in this picture. If you have been following my story, you may have guessed who were sunbathing on it!

Yup, they were seals on that sand bar behind us :)

Goodbye Alsea Bay bridge! Time to head north along the Oregon coast.

Passing by Newport, again!

As we drove further up to the north, we stopped by at this scenic view of Cape Foulweather.

Those were us checking out the gift store

Further up, we reached Depoe Bay, our main destination for today.

Depoe Bay offers a lot of souvenir shops.

Oregon coast has too many scenic places yeah!

This Depoe Bay is known for its smallest harbor :P

This was our main reason to visit this place as we were frustrated for not able to watch orcas at San Juan Island when we were camping at Burlington, Washington. We did not put much hope when we entered this whale watching observation deck.

Nevertheless, to our surprise, this gray whale came to the shore right in front of us! Wow! The feeling was just indescribable! Gray whale did not jump like orcas, hence, we could not take nice pictures of it. I could only imagine how big this whale was...

At some point, it showed part of its tail! Kids were hoping for more tail flipping! Heh!

That was when it was spouting. We thot it would spout much higher like in the cartoons. Hahah! We were all happy that few times it came very close to the shore. Wow! At same time it was so near to a couple of people who were kayaking nearby. Crazy huh?

A nice lil town of Depoe Bay from the whale observation deck!

My boy who was always hungry for more information. How I wish one day they build a glass viewing platform underwater so people will be able to see the whole whale. Bad idea?

Continuing our journey to cruise along the Pacific Coast scenic byway upon with full of satisfaction after watching the whales and their behaviors. It was an experience which I will treasure it for a long time.

We reached another tourist spot along the Oregon coast, Lincoln City.

Can you see the beach in the city?

And the boy in the car was begging us to stop here for a while!

It's a pretty beach at this D river park! Heheh... D river, funny eh?

Our photographer snapped too many pretty shots which made it hard for me to choose.

He would never be satisfied no matter how long we allowed him to play at the beach.. or water.

Nevertheless, the kids miss Nexus Karambunai beach in Sabah. That's our favorite vacation spot where we just lazed about around the resort area to de-stress from work.

Double wow to Sarah for this beautiful unedited shot at the beach!

Guess what... D river is world's shortest, hah! For the record, in one day today, we visited world's smallest harbor and shortest river!

Ohh.. we tasted this smoked salmon at one of the shops in Lincoln city. Goodness... so fresh! Yum! That concluded our Oregon coast vacation!

Our journey continued leaving Oregon coast, passing by Portland and Multnomah Falls, heading towards Cascade Locks where ..

... we would break our journey on I-84.

Overnite in a kabin at Cascade Locks KOA before saying hello again to Idaho tomorrow.
