Day 24: Across the Cornhusker State

2009.07.23
After a good rest at Kimball, Nebraska, we moved on to our next stop, Grand Island which is also in Nebraska. Btw, we spotted quite a few of this machine busy harvesting already.

Farhan seemed to enjoy taking pictures and did not want to let go the co-pilot seat.

It was not fun when this truck appeared in front of us.

It slowed down our journey as...

... we planned to detour to the famous landmark of Nebraska, Chimney Rock.

We just loved to drive all the way to the remote places to visit all these famous landmarks. Heh! I recalled last year we were contemplating whether to make a detour to see Devil's Tower in Wyoming on our way to Mount Rushmore. Believe it or not it was also on the 24th day of our roadtrip. What a coincidence to visit all these rocks on the 24th day, hah!

Well, it's the feel good factor when you watch Travel or Discovery Channels showcasing all the places which you've visited! Kids will always shout "We've been there!" They know how to relate to the story on TV.

Discovery of this unique rock formation was so significant to the pioneers during their long journey to the west. To them, it signaled the beginning of a difficult second phase of their journey across the mountain passage, after the monotonous first phase across the prairie.

We did not plan to spend so much time here, just a brief stop to see the rock :P

We toured around the visitor center and watched their video presentation to learn more about this Chimney Rock.

Those who climbed to the top carved their names on the tower, some dated 1800s. Can't do that nowadays.

This is my favorite!

Hey, Chimney Rock was chosen for the design of the Nebraska's state quarter coin in 2006 to symbolize America's pioneering spirit.

Many left words and pictures when they saw Chimney Rock during their westbound journey on the Oregon as well as California trails.

"The road we took led us close to the base of Chimney Rock, where we stopped for some time to satisfy our curiosity... Mr. Frink carved our names upon the chimney, where are hundreds of others." - Margaret A. Frink June 5, 1850.

The kids were trying to demonstrate how heavy the stuff which the pioneers carried along with them in their wagons.

The pioneers killed the animals along the way in order to survive.

:)

An 1849 dress.

So many impressions and drawings about the Chimney Rock were found.

Enough to satisfy our curiosity and we shall continue our journey back to the east.

For the first time we had to make way for the train!

Ohh... we kept on losing time on this return leg of our trip.

Long John Silvers seemed the perfect choice for our lunch today :)

Garmin led us here!

We enjoyed our grilled salmon and shrimp.

We've been on I-80 from Salt Lake City till our next destination...

Grand Island. There were just too many cornfields across this Cornhusker State!

When we reached our campsite, we were not surprised to find out we were in the middle of corn fields. Hahah!

That was Farhan in the pool! It is his normal routine after finishing helping his daddy pitch the tent.

Hey, the corns were much taller than D! Farhan enjoyed catching fireflies at night, too many of them around here :). This was most probably our last night of tenting for this year's trip as we planned to stay in Kamping Kabins for the next two stops.
