i've just read douglas adam's/mark cawardine "last chance to see" which gives an interesting statement about the importance (and exception) of islands as both recluses and refuges for life that otherwise, on huge habitats like continents, would undergo extinction, and equally extreme fragile, exotic habitats for animals and plants that do not exist on the mainlands anymore... and here you go an show us a place fully climatized, civilized and covered in concrete, certainly only providing a habitat for the most endangered creature on this planet: human beings.
