I play "introduction to jazz" masterclasses at the Manhattan School of Music. We do videoconferences that go to all different schools in all different states in the US. When our bass player (I'll call him the sneaky two), talks about the bass, he likens it to an Oreo cookie. The piano and the drums are the cookie bits, and the bass is the creamy (yummy) filling that holds it all together.
In other words, just like there's no Oreo without the white filling, there ain't no music without the bass.
