Good work Peter. I've had to do the same. In two different cases they told me to do exactly as you did: put it in a small box and dark place so it will have it's best chance to recover (as birds stay still in the dark). In both my cases they flew away the next day! Hopefully yours will also.

Wow Peter, I don't know who is luckier - you to get so close to him or him to be found by someone so caring. fabulous pictures! I hope he's OK. What are you feeding him with. We found a bird once and the vet told us to give it cat meat - it really enjoyed this.

Nice work, Peter.....photos and bird-saving! A couple people have used the word lucky....I think there's your name if he goes on to normal life. A very small bird flew against my window a couple weeks ago and when I went to look it was lying on the deck on its side....but still breathing. Awhile later I was so happy to see it had sat up....stayed right there for over an hour and then finally took off. Birds are fragile, but resilient!

How fortunate for the bird that you rescued him, and how fortunate for you that you had the chance to see a woodpecker up close. Fantastic shots! I think that bird is very "Lucky" and would be a great name for him.
