Remembering The Anzacs

2008.04.26
The approach to the cross.

Floral tributes lay at the base of the cross.

I had a little play with this one. Thought Id let the creative juices flow a little and PSed my way into what I hope is a bit of a vintage feel.

Lest we forget.

Yesterday was Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand. It is a day in which we remember those who fought and lost their lives during the First World War. Today we took a drive to the Mt Macedon Memorial Cross and saw remnants of yesterdays commemorative service.
Why is it, some 92 years later and with all that history has taught us, that we still live in a world where violence and war continues to be a part of our existence?

***In case any of you are wondering...i now have 4 days left to wait until I'm back to broadband speed...not that I'm counting or anything. Im HATING missing so many posts from you guys***

meiling Many thanks for sharing this tribute with us. Yes, it is a GREAT PITY that we do not seem to have learned about the pitfalls of violence and war. Best regards, and have a good weekend.
meiling · 2008-04-26: 07:49
the12thdude The DOF on number 4 brings the flowers to life, almost giving a feeling of cosiness. Very nicely done

lexlevans what a fabulous set - #5 is just stunning! and i totally agree - we have all these days to remember those who were lost in all these wars - yet they still continue to rage on. it makes me sad.
lexlevans · 2008-04-26: 10:58
lexlevans oh - and the angle in #1 is way cool - what a fabulous composition, very unique and creative :-)

hope you're doing well!!!
lexlevans · 2008-04-26: 10:59
etodd80 Great shots, thats pretty cool you two went to pay your respects. I like the angle of #1, makes it a cool shot. I really like the flower in #4 too, it looks so soft.
etodd80 · 2008-04-26: 11:25
noptek Great post. I love the flowers. The answer to the question why? is that human kind is so stupid, never learns from the past, always making the same mistakes, over and over.
noptek · 2008-04-26: 11:53
bamommy Hey Andrea! I've missed you. Love the perception of #1 and all the color of #2.

mahdisafarali nice shots, the first shot is the one i really like the cross is falling but the plant is green, thats the feeling i get from the photo, all in all very peaceful shots :)
mahdisafarali · 2008-04-26: 14:34
vollenda I like the angle of #1! And #4 is gorgeous! And very cool b&w work in the last.

I think the reason we don't learn from history is that we always think we are smarter or more savy than those who have gone before us so of course, we won't have the same problems they had. Or maybe it's the same thing as when you tell a child not to touch a stove because it's hot and they do it anyway because they have to see for themselves.

Great post!
vollenda · 2008-04-26: 14:37
eljapa The last one is impressive.. Nice work again.
eljapa · 2008-04-26: 15:31
ncshutterbug Very nice angle in #1, as well as the DOF. The fourth one is so incredible - the tiny spot in the center is perfectly sharp I love the last one, and the mood it invokes, but I think my favorite is #3. Very touching.
ncshutterbug · 2008-04-26: 18:06
Andrea67 very nice set.........
Andrea67 · 2008-04-26: 18:15
veganess What a nice post. First of all, I love the way #3 turned out. The grave marker all dark, yet the flowers were a beautiful tone. And the sky in the last one, reminds me of an angry sky, kind of sets the mood for what happened long ago. And the macro in #4, beautiful!!
veganess · 2008-04-26: 19:18

dhulsmeyer i'm gonna curse on your blog again - just to prepare you.... the last photo is fucking stellar! the whole set is just great. Today they brought a local boy's body home from Iraq. He had been missing for 4 years and they finally found his body. It's so sad but at least it's some closure for his parents. There is so much support for his family that they are having his funeral in the baseball stadium.

oh...I'm gonna send you money so you don't have to be so ghetto and only get 18 days of broadband! lol
dhulsmeyer · 2008-04-26: 22:27
Gwadannie Very nice set !!!

BreezyOnTheEyes because some people will never learn. **sigh** it's nearly 10pm and i have to wake at the dreaded predawn hour of 4:45am, so it's a short comment from me tonight. jymystique · 2008-04-27: 00:48
onepicaday Only a few men are enough to begin a war and so war will be possible at every time and everywhere.... it´s so sad, but it´s a fact.
onepicaday · 2008-04-27: 01:28
dadlak nice post...you of course know the song "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" by Eric Bogues--all about an Aussie fighting in WW I.

oldbabe Lest we forget...

Why is there still war and violence? When people can't even get along with neighbors and co-workers or even relatives day to day...then how do you expect all to get along in the world?

It starts with teaching the children...you are one of those teachers...you can make a difference...respect and tolerance for all life.
oldbabe · 2008-04-27: 06:57
oldbabe BTW, I really liked #3.
oldbabe · 2008-04-27: 06:58
ambersunsets What a lovely tribute to those who fought and lost their lives in the First World War. I have learned a lot this week from you Aussies, and I am better for it. I've been feeling "historical" lately. I want to learn and try to understand how we have come to our state of affairs today.
Thanks for sharing, Andrea!
Saving the last shot.
