Colors of an Autumn Day - Part 2

2008.04.28
As we prepared to drive home I spotted a gorgeous church I wanted to shoot. No sooner had we pulled over than the clouds heavy with rain opened up and the down pour began. We sat in the car and waited for it to die down.

After over 20 minutes of waiting, the car windows began to mist up and we started to think of ways to entertain ourselves. Sunroof fog art anyone?! Take note of the shameless plugging ;)

Tired of waiting, I wrapped the camera up in a make shift cover (my jacket) and made a run for the church. Snap snap, rush rush, drip drip.

I would have loved to get the macro on this....alas, no time to change lenses..must keep snapping!

Dare I ask you to enlarge? I wont insult your intelligence so the choice is yours. Im sure you'll make the right decision ;)

Shot this out the car window. Yes there is a pole in the way, yes there is a lot of grass in the foreground....I cant pinpoint why I like it. It just has a cool feel.

Im not real happy with these. Here we go again I hear you say..hahaha...Yes I know Im hard on myself. But thats just how I am and it pushes me to better myself :P Obviously I don't hate these shots or I wouldn't be posting them. But I was totally un-prepared for the change in weather conditions and this meant I had to rush my way through what was truly a stunning location (picture me attempting to shelter feebly from the rain, under a range of dripping trees, camera wrapped in my jacket and shivering from the cold!) I just know I could have done a lot more had the conditions been more favorable and had I been able to take a little more time and care with each photo. I guess sometimes we just dont have that luxury and we do the best we can with what we are given.

urmysunshine sometimes working with what we are given is what makes us talented! I just love the second to last photo, you did great! R
urmysunshine · 2008-04-28: 07:39
JuliaGotz I can see why you wanted that church so badly - a great zenlike site. My favorite in the series: the sunroof fog picture. I really like it - tones, layers, play. the snake - play opens things up. and that hand is lovely too.
JuliaGotz · 2008-04-28: 07:51
khashayar Absolutely gorgeous!

Peche Fantastic set, Andrea!!
I've missed you - and it seems there is even symmetry in what we've been photographing... lovely that you ventured out and saw such a hidden gem - that's the best part of going somewhere different.
I simply adore the first shot - great blur of colours beneath the clarity of the wet car window... very well done.
And the fact that you shivered for your art... I know how you feel and appreciate the effort it must have taken.
xoxo

tomie very nice shots of a rainy day!
tomie · 2008-04-28: 09:01
etodd80 2 more days huh? :-)

#5 is totally awesome, a great shot. The rain adds a bit of shimmer to the leafs. Cool building in it too. I'm adding to favs.

The rest are great because they document your trip well. Looks like you two were having a good time despite the rain. It was sunny here this weekend, so I guess it had to rain there right? Opposite sides of the world and all...acutally I just made myself curious what the exact opposite side of the world is, and it's some random spot in the Indian Ocean, closest land is Kerguelen islands? Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

Great shots of what I'm sure was a fun weekend!

AnadaAki Gran set, #5 mi favorita
AnadaAki · 2008-04-28: 09:39
TamaraHarden I LOVE that church. That would be the cutest place to get married. Imagine the photo shoot of you coming out of that door!! That would be amazing!! I love the way a bright rainbow looks against the very dark sky. Kind of the same way the sun is behind you, and you are heading toward a dark sky, and all the tree seem illuminated against that backdrop, because of the sun from behind you. Another of my favorite looks.
TamaraHarden · 2008-04-28: 09:40
tbranscum I have to say that I really liked this set. I can see why you wanted a picture of the church, so beautiful. I love the rainbow and the grass adds to it and sometimes we can't avoid poles and other objects that seem to get in the way of a great photo. I added #3 and 5 to my favs.
tbranscum · 2008-04-28: 09:55
dkelly lol . i love this story , and that image of you writing on the sunroof cracks me up.
and the church was well worth shooting in the rain !
dkelly · 2008-04-28: 09:56
mystic1 Your very hard on yourself, but I think we all are, I think like that too :) The shots turned out wonderful including the driveby :)

kazshots bloody rain! but the rain does make for great shots, if you can stand getting soaked! Love the colours in #1, perspective of #5 and the last one, well I love the blurred grass in the front, how's the different coloured sky on either side of the rainbow, nice shot! Lovely little set.
kazshots · 2008-04-28: 10:54
MIRWAN enchanting colours...

jfrand this is an awesome set. I couldn't possibly go into deeper context than that. I love all of these big time.
jfrand · 2008-04-28: 12:22
ambersunsets LOVE this set! The fog art is way cool.
When the weather doesn't cooperate, sometimes we find unique pictures....as you have done:)

ambersunsets · 2008-04-28: 12:26
Emma Yes, you are hard on yourself! These are lovely Andrea. Beautiful colours and details, shot wonderfully with your creative eye.

I really like the first one.
Emma · 2008-04-28: 12:27
abbeyh13 wow!!!!
soooo good!
I Love #2 especially!
abbeyh13 · 2008-04-28: 12:58
onepicaday I love #2, you captured the atmosphere of creative waiting in a car.. :-)
onepicaday · 2008-04-28: 13:20
dhulsmeyer if you had a pentax you wouldn't have had to wrap up the camera because they are weather sealed =D
nevertheless. a good group of shots. the one you cajoled us into enlarging is especially good and, in fact, so good i placed it into my favorites. you guys are a little low on rain anyway so i guess the downpour was somewhat appreciated - by those who weren't trying to shoot photos during. i'm going have to look up what the difference is in our time zones. i had originally thought 12 hours but i'm thinking it's at least 2 or 3 hours more than that.
dhulsmeyer · 2008-04-28: 13:59
Amethyst I like all of these pictures. Maybe the rain was disappointing, but without it, none of these pictures would have been so great! (because I think the little droplet in #5 is wonderful, and fog, and the rainbow in the last picture...)

First one is my favorite, I think. =)
Amethyst · 2008-04-28: 14:38
pattyb Are you kidding me?? These are fantastic, I'm glad you made the dash and shared them with us. All are brilliant, however #5 should be on the front page of PB, outstanding!! ; )
pattyb · 2008-04-28: 14:45
dadlak wow...you take unplanned shots in the rain that come out way better than anything I could dream of taking in any weather..they are all great - 3 thru 6 especially so...6 also jumps out when enlarged...keep shooting and posting so we can enjoy...thanks!
dadlak · 2008-04-28: 14:51
vollenda The first two are my favorites. I like the watercolor effect in the first shot. Just a great wash of colors. And the sunroof shot is fun! And I liked the plug. :)

I guess you'll have to go back and visit that little church? It's beautiful, so tiny and perfect.

P.S. I'm hard on myself too. It's because we're artist! ;)
vollenda · 2008-04-28: 14:59
DancingDolphin Well the church is fabulous and well worth what you went through to get a good shot! And enlarging that one shot is a good idea... that drop of water is fabulous!!!! Nicely done set.
DancingDolphin · 2008-04-28: 17:05
LotoFoto omg these are amazing.
we are always our worst critic, right?
(And yes, you are too hard on yourself ;)
LotoFoto · 2008-04-28: 17:48
lorinalynn I LOVE number 2!
lorinalynn · 2008-04-28: 18:43
sunshineand i know how it is when i see a photo to be one way and it turns out another way...even if it is good.

it really is a wonderful sight to see the ivy all lit up in a bright colour.
sunshineand · 2008-04-28: 18:56
bauche I understand what you mean about being unprepared. But these are wonderful. The church was worth the wait.
bauche · 2008-04-28: 19:23
BreezyOnTheEyes sounds rather tumultuous there princess! i really did have a hilarious mental image of you running about all a-twitter with your pseudo camera cover, dodging raindrops like bullets. i love it. since i know what a strong and i hear stubborn (and by i 'hear' this is of course mean, 'read' your 'stubborn little shit comment ~_^ ) woman you are, i never have a doubt that you will persist and adapt to any situation!

alas, it is TOO BAD that you didn't have better weather and more time, as this looks like a wonderful, and a bit fanciful, location. perfect for autumn (and i bet any other season) shots.

in true form, as president of the APB fan club, i have inducted number 5 into the hall of photo fame.

l&h pb. l&h.

p.s. you are shameless. (re:the sunroof fog art)
BreezyOnTheEyes · 2008-04-28: 19:36
picturemom These are so cool! I love how diverse the set is all at the same place. You didn't need a macro on the leaves, it is gorgeous as is.
picturemom · 2008-04-28: 19:37
mojaroo GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT GREAT
mojaroo · 2008-04-28: 20:35
bamommy I'm bowing down to you right now queen of photography! You ROCK! I love these.
bamommy · 2008-04-28: 20:49
ncshutterbug Love the set, and love the rain. Rain gives saturates the colors so beautifully, and you took advantage. Numbers 4 and 5 are my favorites, and yes - I enlarged! :)
ncshutterbug · 2008-04-28: 21:26
Queen911 I agree with bamommy. The 1st picture looks like a painting. I would gladly take any of these. Love the entire set, and I did enlarge and glad I did!! Wow.
Queen911 · 2008-04-28: 21:48
zabdorff Wow, the rain turned out not to be so bad--great shots! Love the rained-in theme of 1 and 2.
zabdorff · 2008-04-28: 22:01
MHJphotos "I'm not real happy with these" Ugh!

You my friend, have MY problem. These are outstanding! The church is absolutely stunning. I'm so thankful that you stopped, waited patiently for the rain to stop, shamelessly plugging your blog ;) so the entire world could enjoy that church! If I ever get to down Under in the Spring, er Fall, please take me on a photo excursion to this church!

I'm not entirely sure what our problems are, but we always seem to get it wrong whenever we're unhappy with our shots. These are spectacular, and I'd be thrilled to post something as spectacular as these!
MHJphotos · 2008-04-28: 22:49
LastFrontier Fog art -- I've not seen anyone photograph it, but a steamy window does present such a great canvas. A great set, and has been written many times before me, #5 is terrific, and your self-deprecation seems unwarranted.
LastFrontier · 2008-04-29: 02:27
oldbabe Beautiful church (as well as the rest). I remember when my husband and I used to fog up the windows.
oldbabe · 2008-04-29: 05:44

mb1981 even in the rain you manage to take fantastic photos.
who knows...maybe it's better this way
if the last picture was taken from the car I have to say...you have really clean windows :)

coyoteself Each individual shot is wonderful in it's own way
coyoteself · 2008-04-29: 22:59
Anjie You were taken aback by the sudden Melbourne change in weather? Being a Melbournite, how is that possible??
*ducks for cover*
LOL
I've lived there in my youth, so I can afford a dig or two at Melbourne's beautiful 4-seasons-in-one-day weather :-)
I loooove 1, 3 & 5 , and of course I enlarged!
Your Bokeh rocks!
Anjie · 2008-04-30: 22:24
