Grizzly Creek Action Camp

2007.09.17
Located on Highway 36 in Humboldt County, California.

Tree behind the kiosk is a Giant Sequoia and not native to this area, but in the sane family as the Redwoods that dominate here.

Our campsite

Morning Circle.

Visitor Center.

Van Duzen River.

Hummingbird.

View of clearcuts from Gypsy Mountain.

Climber on rope.

Learning to climb.

Gypsy memorial.

Defaced with drill hole and red paint.

Gypsy was killed on Sept. 17, 1998 - up on that hill.

We had a Humboldt Forest Defense Action Camp at Grizzly Creek State Park. Trainings included climbing, non-violence, and backwoods. The park is next to the site where activist David Nathan Chain was killed when a logger felled a tree on him nine years ago today. We call it Gypsy Mountain. Gypsy was David's forest name. The memorial that Pacific Lumber installed as part of a wrongful death lawsuit settlement has been vandalized with a drill and red paint.
