I think it would be great if under the comment options we had the same options we do with our privacy settings:

Only Friends

Right now the only option is:
Allow non-member comments?

No

I don't think I'd much care who viewed my blog nearly as much as I care about who could comment on it.

good point - the only way to stop someone commenting on your blog right now is to block them.

I'd be up for that. Generally, I'd like to discourage anyone from commenting on my posts if they are too lazy to set their own avatar (usually the spammers). There are times though when I invite friends who are not PB members to look at my photos. I'd welcome the comments of these people. i think what might be useful is to have the flexibility to allow comments on some posts, but not others.

I like the idea (I appear to be a spam magnet) but I also like Jarvo's idea of the variability of the option to each post. Possibly a check box that would allow members / friends / non-members / anyone /
Stuff like that so that I could allow who I desired. Although I have to say that I have learned quite a bit from my non-member and non-friends that have commented to something they have seen on my blog. (mostly about the operation of my camera)

a) i doubt there will be any more development done on photoblog, so your wishing for new features is as pointless as my below remarks.
b) comments are MEANT to be visible for everyone. while this might look like a flaw to some of you who prefer a rather restrictive privacy policy, it is one of the core elements of PB's open concept and design. you put your pics up, people look at it and get the possibility to comment. full stop.
b) for any inappropriate, unwanted comment given in your blog pages, you have the (extremely easy to use) "delete" function. use it, wherever you find a comment unbearable.
c) for entries you don't want comments on at all, just close the blog entry for commenting. many PB publishers do this, consequently forcing commenters to deliver their reaction in private messages (or not at all).
d) this is an open community page, generally meant to share your stuff with whomever cares to look at it. it's not a sub- sub- sub- grouping "i allow this to them and that to those" system of complicated rules of what should appear where for whom when and under which pre-chosen, fully controllable circumstances.
e) i, the commenter, WANT my comments to be seen by everyone who is allowed to view the pictures. it's MY comment, even if it's your picture. you're allowed to re-comment, delete, wipe me from your friends list, but you have no right to define which community sees MY comment.

I think I understand this proposal a little differently to you Stormfish. I thought it concerned who could make a comment on a blog rather than who can see a comment that's already been made.

My concern isn't around people making comments that are meaningful. They can agree with me or disagree with me; they can compliment my work or slate it for all I care. I just think that if there was the option of restricting the comments, it might make PB a less desirable hunting ground for spammers. That would be a great leap forward in my view.

you are right, jarvo: i have misinterpreted liveandletlive's suggestion a little bit, though i admit, i did that on purpose for my lament! (damn, i can't fool you!;-)

and where i am in 100% agreement with you is that it would be desirable if PB were a less desirable hunting ground for spammers. i'm just not sure if privacy restrictions for commenting is the right solution to achieve that - without endangering the rather lovely, open community atmosphere we have here on PB (which is based in my experience very much an the free ability to surf through all the photo entries and comment as freely wherever me, the commenter, likes to give a comment. but maybe i overreact, in fact, i'ts quite possible i do - maybe there is a real need in defining so exactly what you allow your viewers to do and what not - i just don't quite understand why publish a blog entry at all if you just want comments on it from a self defined, closed user group.

Please don't add music to pictures. As someone who avidly listens to my own music on iTunes, there is nothing more annoying than having one's choice of listening drowned out by some website pumping it's selection of muzac at me. This is especially annoying if I have my earphones on as the assault on my ear'oles can be quite shocking and unavoidable.

Whilst I have heard some great music from links people put up (I'm particularly grateful to Mike for introducing me to Squirrel Nut Zippers and Ted for introducing me to Elmer Food Beat), most of the youtube links leave me completely cold. Everyone has different tastes and what does it for you may not work for someone else. It's great to be able to choose what I listen to. Awful to have someone else's choice imposed.

Clicking on the link or not is always up to the viewer/listener. I'm not aware of any way to add music to an entry that makes it automatically play.

I totally agree with Jon (Jarvo) Occasionally someone will link to a piece of music that is (to my ear) completely harmonious with the photograph, and it is true that sometimes I come across a gem, but mostly the music links leave me cold. So I very rarely listen to them and the fact that I can choose not to is great, but to have to listen because the music is embedded in the picture would mean I would have to turn my speakers off whilst viewing photographs.

The photos that we post our own choices, right, and if some person wishes to place music with his/her shots also this is the free choice of that person. He/she has his/her reason to do so. Would someone NOT want to hear music with the pictures, it is simple: do not click the link.

I think it all depends on your interpretation of what is meant by the ambiguous phrase, "put some music under my pictures". If it means putting a hyperlink to youtube or some such place directly underneath the picture, then I can't see that anyone would have a problem with that. As you say, if you don't want to hear it, there's no need to click on the link.

However the same phrase could be taken to mean (and this is how I first interpreted it) how do you underlay your pictures with music so that they appear together? This is something, as I've said, that I take issue with because it imposes unwanted sounds upon other people.

I think if this had have been posed as a simple question on it's own thread, this confusion would have been avoided. Because it was posted here, on a thread for suggestions and feedback, it was assumed to be a suggestion to change the site to have the ability to embed music. I agree with Jon, I hate with sites have music automatically playing. The first thing I do is turn it off, if I have the chance, or navigate away immediately.

I agree. I like having the choice of clicking on a link to a song or not (which I usually do). I don't think there's any chance this site will ever be capable of having embedded music, so I wouldn't worry.

As far as I am concerned the 'link' option is a chance to show off one's taste of music and videos. Photoblog is a wonderful site to get to know some friends from different countries. It means getting into 'relationships.' It is a chance to know more about them and their taste of music. I am grateful to so many of my PB friends-like Sandra- for introducing me to some wonderful piece of Western classical music ( and I don't know much about it and am interested in it of late) and other Pop groups too. My take on it is give it a try and if I like it, well I go on to download it. Or if I don't , I just forget it.
