Pro member accounts now show photographs at higher-res (currently 800px) by default, taking advantage of the single column design we've switched to.
If you'd like to revert to the standard 500px version of the photos with the option to click and enlarge them, you can do so by changing your setting on your blog customization page.
One downgrade, however, is that pro accounts are now limited to 20 photographs per post instead of 30. We understand that some of you might not agree with some of the changes we're making here at Photoblog. If you're unhappy and unwilling to see where we're taking the service, we would be happy to issue you refunds (just email us).
We hope you stick around though, and we're excited to be implementing many of the suggestions many of you have had for a long time. Please continue to offer your suggestions, and we will certainly consider them!

@danrav: Yeah, we added that in after accidentally leaving it out of the previous update.

Keep the suggestions coming y'all!

With the larger column, I have to admit, I'm very much coming around to the new layout.
5 Quick suggestions:
1) Add "create new post" to the "options" list.
2) Make the current post date (the large date in the centre of the column) a link to the current months calendar. (i.e.: http://www.photoblog.com/shanethomas/2011/10).
3) 800px images should remain clickable. At least to allow the slideshow. This allows shots to be viewed individually. Love the new wide view, would just like to have the slide view back again. Realise that this can be done if images are reduced back to 500px, but why not let pro accounts have the best of both worlds, 800px presentation with slideshow.
4) Have the colour customisations selected for a blog be maintained in the "calender" view (background, link colours etc). Would make a huge difference to the appearance.
5) Bring back the "SUBSCRIBE TO THIS BLOG" button!! It's the main mechanism I would use to keep up with blogs of interest. The friends setting is "OK", but the subscribe is far more useful. Would very, very much like to see this link returned. Not sure what the reason was for removing it?

I like the new look, I can not find the button to quickly return to the dashboard without going into the bottom of the page, you can insert on top of another?

Thank you, guys. The "edit this entry" and default 800 px size on pro accounts are a big step. I think reducing the max number of images in a post is actually a good idea. Sometimes there is just too much to see.
I can still resize the comment text box and the ergonomics of [account name]/settings/account name are still confusing.
Is there any chance the non-blog site pages might also be displayed in user-defined colours? Going from my dark grey, muted pages to the site's glaring white ones is something of a shock, especially with the simpler format. Probably not technically feasible, I imagine, but it's just a thought.

@revenant: Definitely feasible, and something we've been thinking about. Don't know when we'll be tackling those pages, but we're trying to tackle one big thing at a time

Much better with the wider view.
But I still need the calendar in the basic view, for all the people from outside the photoblog who are browsing my blog.
Can you give us the choice if we want to show calendar or not?

The new format looks great, thank you!
But I am with Dreamie - would there be any posibility to have the calender in the basic view? The calender is very important for me.

HAHAHA - DUH! Never mind Michael. I didn't have a favorites icon because I was trying the feature on my own posts. Not on other's posts!
Of course all of our posts are defaulted to our faves!!!! Hahahaha.

Great job so far!!!!
maybe make the avatar a wee bit larger???
That "edit this post" feature is so cool!!!!

the buttons that provides basic text editing (italic, bold, underlined) and ability to put a hyperlink behind words are gone from the commenting on blogs - these REALLY made life easier. can you integrate them into your - otherwise quite nice! - new design?

LOVE the new size, thank you for listening to the need for that! I assume the ability to link etc. in the comments section is coming back? Like some comments above, getting used to the calendar being located under "Archives" may take awhile... didn't realize how much I used that feature! But I think the overall design layout is fabulous!

@SewerRanger: Sadly, no, because large versions of photos uploaded when non-pro weren't saved. However, your photoblog should still display properly for those entries (.e.g not be stretched out as if it were trying to show an 800px photo).

Are all accounts now limited to 20 images, or just Pro accounts?
For bloggers who post just a couple of times per week rather than daily, it has been difficult to keep each post under 30 images... 20 is going to be a new challenge! Not loving it.. but I suppose I will have to get used to it. Curious to know what future plans are in store for Photoblog.

the 20 photo limit is on each post, right? not all the posts together?? ~ I'm pretty sure I can deal with that, you're doing a great job
|
 |
|
michaelczhang ·
2011/10/04 - 14:47
Yes, the 20 photo limit is per post, not for an account. You can still create unlimited posts and upload an unlimited number of photos that way

 |
|
gonia ·

I'm not pro account but I'd like to have also large pictures. it's unjust. now, after quick watch at post you know who pay or not pay.
|
 |
|
michaelczhang ·
2011/10/04 - 14:58
@gonia: One of our goals is to make free accounts as nice as possible to use while keeping them reasonable in terms of the costs to us. As of right now, there is no longer any advertising on free blogs and many of our improvements will definitely benefit free account holders as well.

Perhaps Michael could be a little more generous on photo size for non Pro accounts. Maybe all the rest of the changes wouldn't hurt as much.....

In reference to a comment you made earlier about pro accounts... unlimited posts? I thought we could only post once a day? Clarification for those of us that are obtuse?

Michael, I'm on a free account and I think all the changes benefit the pro users and I don't see any relevant improvements for the free accounts!
|
 |
|
dreamie ·
2011/10/04 - 15:31
@bumpusdogs - One post a day means one post on one date but it doesn't mean that you can't post photos on ANY date in history
|
 |
|
michaelczhang ·
2011/10/04 - 15:35
Yeah, that's what I meant Our service is based on dates as the fundamental unit rather than posts.
|
 |
|
gonia ·
2011/10/04 - 15:35
the most important is the size of picture - it is great pleasure to watch bigger pictures as they were, but many people have still small and it hurts a lot! thanks ArtBee for support. free accounts now are like poor kids from Africa.

One more thing came to my mind - @Michael, did you consider making horizontal and vertical photos in the same size?
Horizontal look great after introducing the changes, but vertical are way too big. Most of the monitors don't even show them all, it's 800 on 1200 pixels. Why not making them as big as the horizontal ones, even if they have to be narrower then?

Ok, I realize I'm new here and I'm probably going to be slapped silly for this, but here goes...
I sorry but I just don't understand the basis of the complaints I'm reading that the paying members of this site are getting more benefits than the free members.
Isn't that the way it is almost anywhere?
If you go to a nightclub you really shouldn't demand access to the VIP area that everyone else pays extra for, right?
And aren't we talking about a lousy $2.00 a month?
I looked over a number of sites to post my photos on recently and chose this one. After using it for a little I was more than happy to contribute $2.00 a month for whatever purposes the site owners wish to use it.
I don't mean this to sound harsh, but I just don't get it.
