as long as your are not trying to get into the eyes of a beast on the other side of the valley, i think every tele over 200mm is just a waste of money and adds too much weight to your bag. without a tripod, you'll hardly ever make really sharp pictures with the extra focal length and it usually is a better idea to get nearer to your motif.
