When I download the RAW images from my camera to my computer I find that if I have used a polarising filter, the thumbnail features a special polarising filter icon. I would love to know how this has been detected. Anyone know?

Pretty sure this has to do with the amount of light detected by your camera`s sensors...When u use a polarising filter can affect amount by as much as 1 to 2 stops...I think it is this discrepancy the software recognises....Maybe someone else knows better! ))

Oh I just found out it is spelled POLARIZING with a Z.
@Viv, I think there is more to it than that - otherwise all my overexposed shots would carry the icon.

The physics of it is may be the reason..... circular polarizing filters mean the light entering the camera now has 2 components, horizontal and vertical. Light is a wave and the filter means wave shape is now like a spiral with an up and down vector. One is slightly out of phase compared to the other and this can be detected by your sensor. I think... ...x viv

@Viv, that is a very good answer. I think you may have hit the nail on the head. Thank you.
