I offer the following as help for those who missed 21 Feb 08 and want to try in August. It applies to those of us without a telescope. Apologies if obvious:
* Good tripod and timer are vital
* If using a dSLR, try mirror lock-up to ensure sharper images (in Canons the command is buried somewhere in the menus)
* Little point in trying without minimum 200 mm telephoto or equivalent
* As slow an ISO setting as you can get away with
* Check forums / field guide about noise reduction in long exposures. Cameras can sometimes be a little too keen to eradicate noise
* Tried using focal length reciprocal shutter speed, failed miserably, ended up guestimating
* Got all excited about getting there for partial eclipse start and wasted time; it looked like a standard half moon from a different angle
* Obviously, position equipment at distance from light pollution (street lights, etc.). Use cap on viewfinder for long exposures
* Really long exposures not worth it because earth/moon/universe in general moving, unless you have tracking equipment
* Moon not bright during eclipse (duh!), so hard to focus: practice manual focussing under low light conditions.
Hope it helps.
