Sort of a late reply, but for what it's worth: Since auto-focus is unusable anyway in macro photography you might consider buying an old "analogue" lens and getting an adapter.
There are adapters for most mounts to Canon. I just brought my old Tamron SP 90 macro back from retirement with the help of an adapter. It's a wonderful piece of glass and I'm sure there are even better lenses available for a lot less than a "mid-priced" new lens.

I'd recommend a set of extension tubes. You don't have to buy the Canon one. I've got a set of three in different lengths made by Kenko; these can be used individually of in any combination. For the price of one Canon tube I've got a three! They work with all of my lenses and the auto focus still works. Most of the time though I just use them with Canon's 50mm 1.8; this is the cheapest lens in their range but is a lot of fun.

as Jarvo said, those rings are great value for money!! I got myself a set to, and they work great on all my lenses, from the 50mm and even on my 300mm. So it is a good and cheap alternative, easy to take with in your pockets to if you want to take them with you. So for me this is the best idea, as with second hand lenses, you never know what is wrong with them. Success anyway with what you decide to do, and with the shots !
