Jallikattu is a wild bull taming sport played in Tamil Nadu as a part of Pongal celebration. Although it sounds similar to the Spanish running of the bulls, it is quite different. In Jallikattu, the bull is not killed and the 'matadors' are not supposed to use any weapon.

In Jallikattu, an agitated bull is set to run in an open space. Several people, empty handed, try to tame it by controlling its horns. The winner gets a prize, which is generally tied to the horns of the bull. Only men take part in this macho game. Sometimes, more than one bull is loose at the same time.

Every year hundreds of people lose their lives,trying to prove their masculinity.The village farmers take this game as a display of their masculine strength. Betting is also common during the game.

although supreme court had issued a ban on this sport,it was lifted later...i guess thanks to political pressure that was exerted....
for they say that "it's a part of our culture".
Is culture a display of masculinity by fighting bulls,for petty cash prizes??
i think we need to revamp CULTURE!!!

ummm great photography and good reportage. in my opinion i think that those traditions makes culture, and besides, if a human being wants to risk his life for something its his desition, nobody its forcing anything. and the animal is not hurt or damage...
Very thoughtful report indeed. But then Elclic says, nobody has forced these people, I am sure they were aware of the potential danger that comes with the thrill. But yes, a good point u raised..........we need to revamp Culture.
coool... i missed it.. i was waiting to go for this one.. its a major happening festival in madurai.. hard its banned n so cancelled the trip.. anyways next yr.. i shall ve similar pics in my blog.. good pics..
