Delicacy

1. She approaches the feeder in the sunlight!
pixel
2. You can see her face clearly through the blur of her wings!
pixel
3. Her tiny feet are getting ready to perch.
pixel
4. As she gets her balance, note her tiny tongue protruding from her beak, getting ready to siphon the nectar.
pixel
5. Now she is still -- long enough to take a few sips.
pixel
6. She drinks some more . . .
pixel
7. . . . and tilts her head back to let gravity do its thing. I'd swear those are sequins on her back and not feathers at all.
pixel
8. Coral bells -- also delicate.
pixel
9. Shimmering Azaleas

10. Literary reference: Jane Eyre has these in her wedding bouquet. (Convulvulous)
pixel
11. Morning glory -- as wide and mesmerizing blue as the sky itself

The Ruby-throated Hummingbirds came to my feeder today for the first time this season. I sat for over an hour with my camera waiting to see again the resplendent male, but only the females came to the feeder during that time. Not that they aren't lovely as well. I can't get over their tiny feet! The male's colors are amazing, though. Like jewelry glinting in the sun. Today when I saw him on my way down the porch steps to the garden, he was practically in my ear! I felt his hum and turned to where he hovered just a couple feet away from me -- long enough to have eye contact and for me to greet him before he glided away. They will hang out mostly at the feeder until my Monarda blooms, and then we'll have them darting among those red explosions as well. I'm hoping the trumpet vine and honeysuckle produce blooms for them this year.

ncshutterbug Wonderful shots - especially the hummers. Mine have been visiting for a few weeks now, and I feel so privileged when they pay a visit while I'm near the feeder.
