Today's Things with Wings

2008.07.22
Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

Monarch male, identifiable by the black dot along the vein on each of the rear wings, which is not present in the female.

Silver-spotted Skipper

Great Spangled Fritillaries

Peck's Skipper

A female Spicebush Swallowtail lurks in the grass.

The male is nearby. He has only one orange spot on each rear wing, whereas the female has two.

They begin a dance and proceed to mate, assuming more bizarre positions than the Kamasutra.

It's hard to know where one ends and the other begins in this somersaulting blur of painted wings.

Only one photo matching this species did I find, bearing the name Libellulidae vibrans, or Great Blue Skimmer. But all the other photos on the Web under that name did not share my fellow's black eyes and midnight-blue body. Any entomologists out there who can help me make a positive id?

Fragile Forktail (I can't help but think how much better this will be when my macro lens arrives! Yes, I have succumbed to the temptation and followed Eljapa and Branson's advice to purchase the Raynox DCR-250. I haven't been so impatient in a long time!)

Northern Bluet

I think this is a female Common Yellowthroat. (Sheldon, am I right?) She was hopping around the wineberry vines and other brush like a wren making a repeated "tcheep" note. It took me 25 minutes to get this photo! I wished she would sing "witchitee-witchitee" so I could be sure -- but maybe it's only the males that do that.

This Green Heron was a patient hunter, standing absolutely still for long minutes before grabbing a bug out of the sky or some amphibious creature out of the pond.

Isn't he cool looking?

When something alarmed him, he did his Elvis impersonation.

Today I post two photos of LIVING juvenile American Robins!

The famous red breast is beginning to come in.

A handsome catbird.

Another beautiful bunch of hours outside with my kid and my camera. The non-winged things will follow in tomorrow's post.

Sheldon I like things that fly! A great collection indeed. Green Herons are fun.

Is #25 a new take on Caturday?

Emma These are wonderful. I adore butterflies - you have captured the colours and the patterns perfectly.

The dragonflies are great too - I would love to be able to get a shot of one, but they're too fast!

ncshutterbug Such amazing shots! I love the delicate dragonfly wings, and the gorgeous butterflies. I have yet to capture decent shots of either. And your bird photos - wonderful! Such patience you have, and it definitely paid off.

astrobrojler Such a diversity of butterflies in your neighbourhood, I appreciate action shots with Spicebush Swallowtails. Amazing Green Heron – I like especially #22. Punk's not dead! ;)
