My First Focused Macro

2008.07.30
The Philadelphia Inquirer

I finally bought a book on photography.
No more "auto this" and "auto that" for me. I'm in manual mode now.

The past several days have been about experimenting with my camera's settings, all in preparation for understanding what my new macro lens attachment would require to produce focused photos.

First of all, I had no idea I'd have to get so physically close to my subject. (Thanks for that tip, Eljapa.) Or that the distance within which to achieve clear focus would be so very narrow. It reminded me (not surprisingly) of using the microscope in biology lab. The slightest bump to the slide or the knob and the specimen's focus was gone.

This photo depicts the edge of the newspaper that was lying on the living room table the moment I figured these things out.

ncshutterbug Congrats on going manual, and your macro! If you don't have one already, a tripod and remote shutter release will be invaluable for macros.
