At the Edge of the Woods

2008.08.10

A red eft -- the juvenile terrestrial stage of the red-spotted newt (Notopthalamus viridescens), which falls between the aquatic tadpole stage and the aquatic adult stage in the life cycle of this species.

One of about 20 mushroom species we encountered in the woods here. The prettiest ones were a smooth, beautiful purple color, but my shots of them came out poorly.

On our way to Maine, we stopped in Chesterfield, Massachusetts to visit a friend of mine from high-school days. It's fun to have our kids together -- both of whom love nature and enjoyed building fairy houses and discovering red efts, slugs, and a multitude of fungi.

Lynda Nice set. As a cild I used to keep newts as pets (well not for long as they always wandered off from the bowl of water I had them in!)
