We visited Fishbourne Roman Palace this morning, all of half a mile from our house. The last time I went to the Palace was while I was still at school so I’d forgotten most of what was there. The most important feature of the museum is their collection of Roman mosaics which have been excavated since 1960 when a workman discovered one while digging a trench. This photo is a close up of their most complete mosaic, an image of Cupid riding on a dolphin. It’s quite hard to get good photos of the complete mosaics because of the angles involved and the low light levels so I thought I’d treat it to an abstract treatment instead. It’s amazing to think that these priceless and unique pieces of history are so close by, in our own village. I think we’ll definitely be going back for another look, perhaps without the 25 year gap this time!
