Racton Monument

I’ve been driving past Racton Monument near Funtington on my way home from school on a Thursday for months thinking each time what a good photo it would make. However, it took me until today to actually find the time to stop and get my shot. I liked the combination of the threatening clouds in the sky behind the tower with the sun shining on the cornfield in front. Having done some research this evening, it seems the monument was built around 1772 as a possible summer house for nearby Stansted House. Apparently it hasn’t been used for a long time and is now derelict. From a distance it looks like a fascinating building so I can see I’ll be going back on foot to see what it looks like from a closer perspective.

khooker The 'owners' tried to get planning permission to develop it into a dwelling some years ago, but Chichester District Council said no. Why, I cannot remember. Keep up the fantastic work with your camera.
