The sky at night

It was incredibly clear this evening (and freezing cold too!) so I decided to have another go at a star trail photo, this time in our back garden. After a failed attempt to focus on a tree in the garden I decided to simply aim at the open sky to see what patterns emerged. As it happened I ended up with the gable of our house in shot as my lens covers such a wide angle at 10mm. I had intended to crop it out but in the end I decided to keep it in as it adds some perspective and it was rather nicely floodlit by the security light from the house behind us that turns on periodically. This final shot was created by stacking up 129 forty second exposures. I like the circular patterns of the stars as they track across the sky, contrasted with the straight lines of passing aircraft. I can see I’ll be coming back to this form of photography again in the future.
