When I visited Chichester Cathedral on Tuesday the Head Verger (who’s used to seeing me around the building clutching my camera) tipped me off that the colourful tapestry which is hung behind the high altar would be taken down on Thursday. The John Piper tapestry which has hung there since 1966 is only taken down for Holy Week but this year it has been taken down a little early and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to go and take some photos of what lies behind it. I spent a bit of time taking shots in portrait and landscape format but decided this wide screen format worked best.

The other big change in the Cathedral today was the addition of some staging at the western end in preparation for a choral concert tomorrow night. With the Vergers’ blessing I took advantage of this and also grabbed some shots from the top step of the staging –about 20 feet up in the air. It’s a viewpoint that’s not usually available (not to the general public at least) so it seemed daft to pass up the opportunity. It’s certainly the first chance I’ve had to take any photos from the same height as the Cathedral’s chandeliers!
