I had to drive up to Suffolk today ready for a conducting job in Ipswich tomorrow so I decided to take the opportunity to visit Colchester Zoo on the way. It was absolutely heaving with parents and children making the most of the last few days of holiday but this didn’t stop me taking over 300 photos. It’s been a really dull, overcast day so I had to use a high ISO setting to get fast enough shutter speeds for my long lens but in spite of this I came away with quite a few shots that I was really pleased with. I managed to visit quite a few of the animals at feeding time which gave some good opportunities for action shots and I even got to feed some leaves to one of the giraffes.
I especially enjoyed photographing the lions and the wolves but my absolute favourite today was the Orang-utan. I know humans and orang-utans are supposed to share something like 98% common DNA and looking into his soulful eyes I could sense a connection. It took two visits to the Orang-utan enclosure and many attempts to get this shot as there were so many people around creating reflections on the glass but I’m glad I persevered as I would really have kicked myself if I’d left without capturing these wise old eyes.

That truly is a wonderful shot of the orangutan, it looks like you were in there with him! (and where are you conducting in Ipswich?)

Great collection, Helen. Although I don't like zoos and rarely I visit them, I admit that if you haven't said that the photos are from a zoo they could pass for photos from a nature reserve. My favorite is the one of the male lion... he needs someone to brush his hair! :)
