Flying buttresses and ancient repairs

2009.07.16

I had a little teaching to do in Winchester this afternoon so Kevin decided to come along with me for the ride and we went up a couple of hours early to have a mooch around the city. We took a short stroll around the Cathedral Close followed by a coffee in the café. As usual I took my camera along with me and took a few shots of the Cathedral - these two caught my eye when I downloaded them. The first features the flying buttresses along the south side of the building which take the strain of the nave’s vaulted ceiling. The second continues my theme from yesterday of characterful door furniture. It’s the lock from the Cathedral’s south door. Once again, I like the interesting textures but I was particularly taken with the patches of wood which have been inserted, probably centuries ago, to make repairs to this ancient wooden door.

MUMMoira Interesting shots. maybe there was a bigger lock , keyhole at one point in the history of this door, hence the patches
