I’ve known what I was going to shoot for today’s posting for several weeks now, ever since I first saw signs advertising the Chichester Triathlon. This event takes place every July and I understand there were about 340 people participating today. The event comprises a 600m swim in the local leisure centre pool, followed by a 42km cycle ride to South Harting and back (and those who live locally will know what a steep hill that involves!), finishing with a 10km run. I wanted to try out my slow speed panning skills on the cyclists so I researched the route, found a good spot just outside the village of East Ashling (only about a mile from the location of yesterday’s photo) and loitered on the grass verge with my camera. There was a steady stream of cyclists, some of whom looked like they were trying harder than others, and they all seemed happy to have their photo taken – I was amazed at how many looked straight into my lens or waved and smiled at me as I clicked the shutter. Needless to say, I had a pretty low success rate and I’ve come to the conclusion that panning for cyclists is even harder than for cars – they may move more slowly but there’s less substance for the camera’s focussing to track as they move. Not all of these are perfectly in focus but I’m quite pleased with my first effort – I’ll just have to come back and try again at next year’s event for some more practice!
