If the old wives’ tale about cows sitting down before it rains is true the cattle of Beverley were definitely expecting precipitation this morning. I had a free period before lunch so I took the car down to Westwood Pastures, just outside Beverley. This area of grassland is common land, given to the people of Beverley by the Lord of the Manor in 1380 for the townsfolk to graze their livestock. These days it is home to a large number of cattle who roam freely, often causing traffic chaos as they amble nonchalantly across the road! They were certainly feeling very relaxed this morning, lounging on the grass, and didn’t seem worried by me and my camera. A couple of them stood up as I walked slowly towards them but they soon realised I wasn’t a threat and sat back down to continue chewing the cud.
