Sunshine and steam

2009.08.16
This and the following photo are the wheels of two of the first steam engines we saw as we arrived - I like the strong shapes and vivid colours

This chap was demonstrating his steam gramophone machine (yes, really!) - it played 78rpm records and water dripped from the horn as it played.

The list of toll charges mounted on the wall of the early 19th century toll cottage, rehomed from Beeding in Sussex

The Downland Gridshell. This building, constructed from slender oak beams was opened in 2002 and provides much needed storage and workshop space on site.

A close up of the Gridshell's interlocking construction

An external shot of the Gridshell. The wood of the outer shell has weathered to a lovely silvery grey colour now so I decided it worked best as a monochrome image to emphasise the strong lines of the wood, aluminium and glass.

The Weald and Downland Museum is one of the few museums where dogs are welcome and almost every other family seemed to have brought their family pet along for the day. This chap is called Pepper and I liked his soulful eyes. Apparently he doesn't like cameras much usually but he seemed very happy to pose for me! I converted if to black and white as his owners' pink and blue legs behind were rather distracting!

A candle I found burning in 'Bayleaf', a 16th century house from Cowfold in Sussex.

The museum is also home to many animals typical of those which would have been bred around the time the houses were originally built. I had to use some stealth to creep up on this chicken!

Some architectural patterns from the Titchfield Market Hall.

The sign on the gate said these were Southdown Sheep and that they had woolly faces, although they didn't seem very willing to reveal them to us! By this stage I quite fancied joining them for a snooze in the shade after all that walking!

Kevin and I decided to complete our week long ‘stacation’ today with a trip to the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum in Singleton, just north of Chichester. The museum features lots of old buildings from all over Sussex and Hampshire which have been rescued and moved to this lovely country site. The oldest building on site dates from the 15th century and the newest is the Downland Gridshell which was completed in 2002 as a conservation workshop and storage area. This weekend had the added attraction of being their annual steam weekend so there were masses of steam driven vehicles on site which only added to the atmosphere (not to mention the smog created by their steamy outpourings!). Kevin and I took a gentle stroll round the museum (we’d both been there many times before as children and adults) and I snapped away as we went, capturing a huge variety of subjects, from the visiting steam machines to architectural details and some of the animals they keep on site.
