Look up!

2009.08.24
This anchor sits on top of what used to be the Dolphin and Anchor hotel, now a Wetherspoons pub.

The Chichester City Crest on the Butter Market (a small market hall, sadly now almost empty).

This lady and the chap below sit either side of the front door of one of Chichester's many disused churches. Until recently this particular one was used as a religious bookshop.

I like the texture and colour of the brickwork on this side wall of the West Cornwall Pasty Shop - they could do with repainting their window frame though!

I found these two suspicious looking characters on the National Westminster Bank!

Another piece of carved stonework on the Nat West Bank - presumably added by the building's original users.

I found this ornate head on the wall of one of the shops in East Street.

I decided to set myself a challenge today – to photograph some of the architectural details often missed by visitors to Chichester. Many of the buildings in Chichester’s shopping streets are very old, often with modern shop fronts added at ground floor level. However, if you look up as you walk around the city there are all sorts of interesting details to be seen. I’m sure many of the people in town today must have thought I was slightly odd pointing my camera up at the upper floors of the shops but I found all sorts of oddities that I’d never noticed before – here they are!

Latecomer Nice set. I find it sad that the churches are falling out of use. Not that I am a religious body, far from it. But they are such a part of our heritage and have contributed so much to our common values, such as they are. I live in the land of Oz where a building is considered old if it was built in the 19th century, so the impact is not so great here.
