I went over to my parents’ house this afternoon with my Mum’s birthday present (happy birthday Mum!) and came up with the idea for today’s photo while I was there. They usually have a band of stones between the decking and the lawn in their garden but a lot of the larger stones have been moved while they’re having an extension built. I decided to select a few of these stones for a still life shot and this is the result. I was rather taken with the texture of the front stone – some sort of lichen I presume – and I thought that contrasted nicely with the red one behind which is much smoother in texture. My Dad told me the red stone was picked up from a beach in Cornwall by his parents while they were on their honeymoon in 1939 so evidently it already had 80 years of family history even before I started taking its photo.
