When I arrived at school this morning it was bucketing with rain and, judging by this tree stump, it was perfect mushroom growing weather! I was staggered at the sight that greeted me – the stump was surrounded by eight or nine huge clumps of mushrooms of various types, obviously enjoying the damp conditions. The lighting was pretty dreadful but that didn’t deter me and as soon as the rain eased off I went outside with my camera to capture some shots as they’ll almost certainly have gone by next week. I have no idea whether these are edible for humans but no doubt the wildlife in the area will be enjoying a feast in the coming days!

Helen, be careful! This could well be "bracket fungus" typical on a dying stump of a tree in damp conditions as we have recently had. According to RHS some can be edible but most should not be considered edible. Great photo. Kay · 2009-10-06: 16:24
