The Tuesday Inspiration: and the theme is...

Today’s theme is all about… well I’m not going to tell you actually – it’s for you to work out from the shots posted by all the participants!

My initial intention was to try and combine this Tuesday’s theme with Caturday but this proved to be difficult as our cat Gracie was rather less than cooperative! Caturday will have to wait until later in the week now. Instead I stopped off beside the River Lavant on my way home from school. The River Lavant is the river which runs through Chichester. For at least half the year it’s just a dry riverbed but from about December until well into the spring it flows south across the countryside from East Dean, through some Victorian culverts under the city and then on out to sea. For many years during the 1980s and 90s it failed to flow at all then returned with a vengeance in 1994, seriously flooding the centre of Chichester – all this from a river which is a mere six feet wide at full flow! A second bout of flooding in 2000 threatened to destroy the culverts (the water was flowing at 6 cubic metres per second through tunnels designed to take only 2 cubic metres of water). The solution was to get the fire brigade in, who ran 13 miles of pipes around the city to pump the water safely from one side to the other. Since then a flood relief route has been created to divert excess water away for the city and safely out to sea, should the need arise again.

I took today’s photo from a narrow road called Sheepwash Lane in the village of Lavant which was historically used to bring sheep to be washed in the river. The road runs right beside the river so it was an ideal point to get access. I noticed the snowdrops on the far bank and couldn’t resist including them so I set up my tripod and camera and used a polarising filter to slow the shutter speed down. In the process I got completely soaked as it was raining hard but I made sure my camera survived by putting the large cotton handkerchief I keep in my camera bag over it to keep off the rain. I think it was worth the effort – the real proof will be if you can all figure out what theme it is depicting! In the meantime I’m going to go and dry out my soggy clothes….

revenant Very subtle and rather charming. And I thought I was sacrificing something by not drinking the wine. Here you are, getting wet!

BTW, "Albertina" isn't her real name. I'm trying to shame her with silly ones into coming out with her real moniker. Every week I come up with something else.

revenant Oh, and thank you for the fascinating input about the Lavant.

davids I like the half-and-half composition which, in theory, shouldn't work very well.... so much for theory :-)
