My work took me to Bristol today to perform in a concert. By the time I got away at just after 5pm the sun was beginning to drop in the sky, creating a lovely warm light so I decided to take a detour to the Clifton Suspension Bridge on my way home. In all the times I’ve visited Bristol I’ve never seen the Clifton bridge in the metal and I was itching to take some photos. Unfortunately I’d left my wide angle lens at home so I contented myself with taking some detail shots with my nifty-fifty instead but I can see I’ll be back with the right gear again soon! It really is the most amazing structure. It was designed in 1830 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and construction started in 1836. After a hiatus, due to lack of funds, the bridge was finally completed in 1864, five years after Brunel’s death. Even today it is a beautiful and striking bridge and it’s amazing how it copes so well with the rigours of modern traffic when Brunel would only have anticipated horse drawn vehicles using it.
