Feeding time?

I spent most of today slaving over a hot computer, arranging a piece of music for a festival that’s coming up next month. By 5pm I’d finished it and was beginning to feel in need of some fresh air so I went out in my car in search of today’s photo. I didn’t have a clue what I was looking for so I headed up towards Goodwood in the hope that inspiration would strike. I drove past a field of cattle near the Rolls Royce factory but they were a long way from the fence and I didn’t have my long lens with me. Instead I stopped and took some abstract shots of the metal gate to another field. Content that I had something in the bag I set off for home, passing the same field of cattle again. As I did so I noticed they were now much closer to the fence so I stopped and hopped out of the car. I can only assume it was almost feeding time as they were all heading the same direction with a purposeful look. As they did so some of them stopped and stared at me and it was then that I caught this shot. I’ve had to crop it fairly heavily as my maximum 105mm focal length was still rather inadequate but there was still enough detail left to make a satisfying portrait. I wonder how long they had to wait for dinner?!

I think this is a really good shot. Normally they are not patient enough to pose for a good photo! Over here we stopped bringing the cows their hay last week, but are still feeding them extra cake each day (2 kilos per cow). Ridiculous because there should be enough good grass in April for them to live on. It is costing the farmer a fortune!
