We’re very lucky at the Recorder Summer School to have a large number of students who bring their big recorders along with them to the course. We have about a dozen great basses and a similar number of contrabasses. One of the contras was standing near the window in the hall this evening so I took the opportunity to take a close up of some of the keywork. These instruments are well over six feet tall and make a wonderful sound – having so many of them here makes a fabulous addition to the sound of our massed playing sessions. If only I could give you an idea of the astonishing tone these instruments produce via a photo!
