This Nimrod, which is still in full flying condition, is going to be permanently based at the museum as a tribute to the fourteen crewmen who died in Afghanistan in 2006 when one of these aircraft blew up after refuelling.

This is the catapult used by Barnes Wallis when he was testing out ideas for the bouncing bomb which was used in the 1943 Dambusters raid. It was placed in pretty much the darkest corner of the museum so I had to be very creative with my aperture to capture a shot at all!

Before we drove home today Kevin and I visited the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington. They were holding a special event to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain today so the museum was very busy with lots of retired servicemen who had gathered there for a remembrance service this afternoon. It certainly gave our visit a real sense of occasion and allowed for lots of people watching. I happened to have my 70-200mm lens with me so I spent a lot of time capturing details, including some wonderful textures in the aircrafts’ weathered paintwork. It truly was a day out for the entire family, pets included, and I was befriended by one particular dog who was very friendly and only too happy to pose for a photo!
