I decided I wasn’t going to be beaten by the weather today, no matter what it threw at me, and took a trip to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t taking any notice of my defiant stance and it started to drizzle heavily almost as soon as I’d arrived! Not to be deterred, I strolled around the gardens looking for autumn colour (and thankfully there was still lots of it, despite the strong winds this week) and then tucking my camera back under my coat in between shots. After lunch the rain stopped, although it still felt more like dusk than the middle of the day. I really wanted to use my polariser to make the most of the gorgeous colours I saw but rapidly realised that was impossible as there simply wasn’t enough light. At some point I’ll go back to take some more photos as the 19th century glasshouses there are simply stunning but I can’t help feeling they’ll look even better against a blue sky rather than a grey one. The new feature since I last visited over a decade ago was the treetops walk. Not designed for those who suffer vertigo, it sits 18 metres up so you really are at treetop level. In the strong wind yesterday it was quite disorientating as you became aware of the whole walkway swaying every time you stopped to admire the view!
